- We now know the two teams that will be in the final of the FIFA Confederations Cup
- As Chile will go head to head with Germany
- Chile booked their place on Wednesday night with a shootout win over Portugal
- While Germany beat Mexico in emphatic fashion last night
- It was a game that was as good as over within the first 8 minutes as a brace of goals for Germany created a blitzkrieg which all but dumped Mexico out
- To concede one goal early is undoubtedly a hammer blow but to concede two in quick succession is just sloppy
- Leon Goretzka was the hero of the hour (or should that be 8 minutes) after his lightning fast brace put Germany comfortably clear
- The Schalke midfielder swept home a Benjamin Henrichs pass from 20 yards to open his account early on
- And just two minutes later he would get his second and Germany’s advantage would be doubled after a slide rule finish found it’s way into the net
- Although there were 2-0 down Mexico did not let their heads drop as over the course of the game they had 26 efforts on goal
- They did however create a number of chances in the first half in a bid to reduce the deficit but they wasted what opportunities they had carved out for themselves
- Had they been more clinical then the outcome could have been a very different story and it is fair to say that the final score does not really reflect the course of the game
- That said any hope that Mexico could at least get a foothold in the game were dissipated just before the hour when Germany made it 3-0
- Timo Werner who laid on the second for Goretzka scored one for himself as he tapped home Jonas Hector’s cross
- That was a third goal in just two games for Werner
- Mexico were down and out now but they did manage to get themselves a consolation and what a consolation it was
- With a minute of normal time remaining Marco Fabian let fly from fully 35 yards and his shot fizzed past Marc-Andre ter Stegen to finally put Mexico on the scoresheet
- But within moments Germany would regain their three goal advantage thanks to a late effort from Amin Younes
- Job done and a place in the final confirmed for Joachim Low’s experimental side
- For Germany it is testament to just ho much talent they have at their disposal when you consider this is not even a full strength squad
- It certainly bodes well for their defence of the FIFA World Cup next year
- As for Mexico is anyone honestly going to watch the 3rd/4th place play off with Portugal on Sunday afternoon
- I honestly cannot think of a more pointless fixture
