It was always going to be a tall order for Barcelona to win the La Liga title this season as they went into the final day of the season three points behind their arch rivals Real Madrid and that is how it would stay as both teams did their bit in terms of the last evening of action which took place yesterday evening.
With Los Blancos ahead within two minutes the title race was as good as run and the evening would take another twist when Eibar themselves would take an early lead thanks to a Takashi Inui strike and the night would take an even more spectacular twist when Inui made it 2-0 to Eibar just after the hour mark.
That eventually woke the beast that was Barcelona as they then staged an impressive comeback but it was too little too late for what would be Luis Enrique’s last league game in charge of the Catalan giants, they do still have the Copa Del Rey to take part in next week but a third successive league title has alluded them.
David Junca’s own goal just a couple of minutes late halved the deficit while Luis Suarez would level proceedings on 73 minutes. Then the game would turn on its head again as Capa was sent off for Eibar and then Lionel Messi would finally put the home side ahead with 15 minutes remaining. With Eibar now a man short, Barca turned the screw and Messi would score his second of the evening.
A late flourish but Barcelona will look to their lack of consistency in the early season which has ultimately hampered their title tilt, El Clasico victory last month was not enough as Real Madrid have been ominous throughout the whole campaign. Can Luis Enrique at least leave on a relative high with cup success next week?
