PSG vs Chelsea a few quick thoughts

  • Guus Hiddink’s unbeaten run since returning as Interim Manager finally comes to an end with defeat last night in Paris
  • It was always going to be a test for the makeshift back four with John Terry joining Kurt Zouma on the sidelines
  • It was all PSG for the first 15 Minutes certainly in terms of possession but perhaps not in terms of attacking threat
  • Zlatan Ibrahmovic went in the book after 18 Minutes when he was cautioned for raking his studs down the back of John Obi Mikel. It may have been his first foul of the night but it was a deserved Yellow Card
  • Diego Costa nearly put Chelsea ahead on the counter minutes later, his header from Baba Rahman’s cross was superbly tipped onto the bar by Kevin Trapp
  • That chance for Chelsea certainly woke the game up
  • Then Ibrahimovic fluffed PSG’s best chance just after the half hour when he headed into the ground instead of back across goal
  • But he atoned for that mistake by putting PSG in front minutes later, it was a deflected free kick that beat Thibaut Courtois and sent the home fans into raptures
  • Lucky for PSG, harsh on Chelsea
  • But Chelsea weren’t down and out at this point with John Obi Mikel of all people prodding home a Diego Costa flick on to give the Premier League Champions a crucial away goal
  • Honours even at the break
  • In the Second half the game ebbed and flowed with PSG looking to get back in front and Chelsea doing their best to try and nick a winner
  • Oscar had arguably Chelsea best chance after the break and failed to take it
  • Moments later they were punished as a clever Angel Di Maria pass found Edinson Cavani who slotted home from a tight angle to put PSG back in front.
  • That was the killer blow on the night for Chelsea but with that away goal the tie is still evenly matched
  • Credit must go to Branislav Ivanovic and Gary Cahill who did have a decent game under the circumstances, one that keeps their teams hopes alive of moving through to the Quarter Finals
  • But it’s first blood to Laurent Blanc’s PSG
