Manchester City vs Everton a few quick thoughts

  • Well there’s no all Merseyside Final this year as Manchester City came from behind to secure a day out at Wembley on Sunday February 28th
  • They certainly didn’t make it easy for themselves as Ross Barkley put Everton after 18 minutes
  • But that lead didn’t last long as a deflected Fernandinho effort managed to level things up just 6 minutes later
  • City could have gone ahead before half time but Sergio Aguero hit the woodwork
  • Gerald Deloufeu had an excellent chance to put Everton ahead after the restart by his effort was well read by Willy Caballero. Deloufeu was probably guilty of showing his intent to early and the City Keeper managed to save to avert the danger
  • City then hit the woodwork again through David Silva and you almost had a feeling it wasn’t going to be there night
  • Then Kevin De Bruyne came on
  • But the real turning point was the Assistant Referee’s failure to give the ball being out of play in the build up to City’s Second Goal of the Evening.
  • Slow motion replays clearly showed the ball being over the line after Raheem Sterling cut the ball back for De Bruyne, who slotted home to even up the tie up overall
  • You could argue that Everton had a slice of luck in the first half during the build up to Barkley’s Goal as Ramiro Funes Mori fouled Sergio Aguero. Ultimately a decision like that is still subjective but when it’s a matter of fact decision such as the ball crossing the line or not then you have to feel sorry for Everton
  • Then who else but Sergio Aguero added salt into the wounds as his late goal but City 3-1 up and ahead in the tie for the first time and that was enough to secure victory over the two legs and deny Roberto Martinez’ side a first trip to Wembley since 2009
  • A big night for Everton and a crucial loss in what all but ends their season now, they are still in the F.A. Cup but they are no means favourite and with them currently 12th in the League you wonder if the season will now fizzle out
  • Roberto Martinez will be cursing the decisions by Official’s no doubt as he feels the pressure on his job notch up ever so slightly. Progression to the Final would have appeased the vocal Everton fan base and their frustration at a season of underachievement
  • The only negative for City was the injury to Substitute to Kevin De Bruyne, it seems as if another key man is set for a lengthy spell out on the sidelines, just when they look like they are getting back to full strength and firing on all cylinders they suffer another setback. It looks like more will be asked of Aguero as they aim to get back to the top of the Premier League
  • The quadruple albeit unlikely is still a real possibility for Manchester City but for Manuel Pellegrini the focus shifts to the F.A. Cup this Weekend
