Wolfsburg vs Real Madrid – Match Preview

It’s undoubtedly a tough draw for Wolfsburg and with them being probably the weakest team left in the competition they are certainly going to have their work cut out Tonight when they play host to Real Madrid but credit where credit is due for the German side for getting this stage and for that reason alone you can’t write them off just yet.

It’s fair to say that this season’s Bundesliga campaign hasn’t matched the heights of last season in which they were Bayern’s nearest challengers and they won the German Cup. This season they have struggled in comparison and find themselves 8th in the Bundesliga.

They didn’t have the best warmup for this game at the weekend after they fell to defeat away at Leverkusen with the home side running out 3-0 winners. That defeat has cast them adrift of Schalke in 7th and their chances of European Football for next season are looking slim.

Their opponents Real Madrid will be riding on the crest of a wave after their defeat of Barcelona at the Nou Camp on Saturday and will no doubt be looking to continue the momentum with a win in home of Volkswagen Tonight

Ronaldo stole the headlines on Saturday night with his winning goal and you wouldn’t bet against him adding to his already record Champions League goal haul of 90. With Lionel Messi registering a blank last night then there will be extra impetus for the Portuguese star to extend his record even further.

Even with the El Clasico win the La Liga title may just be out of reach with them still 7 points plus a lesser head to head record behind Barcelona therefore Zinedine Zidane will feel this is probably their most realistic chance of silverware this season. I have a sneaky feeling they will get all the way to the final at least

Zidane has only lost once all season so far and that was to their cross city rivals Atletico last month. If Zidane could mastermind an 11th European Cup victory for the club then it would only enhance his legend status further. Whether it would secure him the job long term though is a different question due to the sack happy nature of Florentino Perez but job security is not the concern right now it’s getting past the potential banana skin of Wolfsburg

Wolfsburg have been saving their best performances for the Champions League this season so expect them to raise their game and make life difficult for Los Blancos. That said I think Real Madrid will have more than enough to take a healthy advantage to the second leg. An away win for me.
