Will Leicester’s decision to stick be their undoing?

After a recent run of results which is unlike one you would expect from a team defending a Premier League title, the Leicester owners have gone public today in giving manager Claudio Ranieri their ‘unwavering support’ but could this end up being a help rather than a hindrance.

That’s because although Ranieri may have the backing the club are sinking like a stone down the table with the threat of relegation becoming a real concern for all connected with the East Midlands club. It’s 5 games without a win for The Foxes and the last four of those have been successive defeats.

The problem they now face is that the likes of Hull, Swansea and Crystal Palace have all rolled the dice and certainly in regards to the first two of this trio they are starting to see some kind of resurgence, which in itself makes life more difficult for Ranieri.

Once again the Premier League has thrown up some uncertainty this season although perhaps not at the same level as the one previous. After the last campaign the big clubs such as Chelsea, Manchester City were to make sure that never happened again but it is perhaps happening on a smaller scale.

Look at West Bromwich Albion for example whose sponsors this season are K8 many tipped them to struggle this campaign with Tony Pulis being tipped by many as the man to win (or perhaps lose) the sack race. But The Baggies have far exceeded expectations, perhaps even their own as they currently sit 8th in the table. Perhaps the sponsor is a lucky omen?

Because of the topsy turvy of the Premier League it has perhaps caught Leicester on the hop. It’s been all too apparent that they have but too many eggs in their Champions League basket, a strategy that should they crash out to Sevilla later this month may come back to haunt them.

Not only that but after spending £77m on players, Ranieri does need to attribute some of the blame for such a woeful defence of the Premier League title. Of the signings that he has made since winning the title only Islam Slimani from Sporting Lisbon has come anywhere near getting a tick in the success column.

But it’s perhaps the departure of N’Golo Kante which has been the most irreplaceable blow. He was simply phenomenal last season and it should came as absolutely no surprise that Chelsea are running away with the title this year after they secured his services in last Summer.

The question that everyone now has to ask is although Ranieri won the title last season does that make him immune from getting the sack? Well the club owners certainly think so at present but surely had they not won the title last season then his job would be under threat.

It’s almost as if now Ranieri is untouchable it might be the one thing that sees them getting relegated, because where another club would change things around should results go south Leicester will now have to stick with the man who led the fairytale campaign.

Support is one thing but if results do not approve then that support may just seem up in the bottom three come May.
