The Ex Inter Milan and Napoli Manager Mazzari had moved to England with the aim of being in charge of a Premier League team and with today’s appointment that plan has fully come to fruition
The question is whether or not the Pozzo Family who own Watford had Mazzari lined up a few months ago rendering what Quique Flores did this season futile
Watford’s form did drop off a cliff in 2016 but let’s not forget they never once flirted with relegation and also got to The F.A. Cup Semi Finals, losing to Crystal Palace and ending hopes of a return to Wembley this Afternoon
If they are positives, then the criticism for Watford in the second half of the season and that of Flores is that they seemingly lacked ideas and once the goals of Odion Ighalo and to a lesser degree Troy Deeney dried up they never really had a plan b.
The danger for Watford and the Pozzo’s in particular is that they can’t keep spitting out Managers. It’s working at the moment what with a promotion and then staying in the Premier League but this surely isn’t something they can keep getting away with
The task for Mazzari is to make sure they don’t go backwards under his tutelage and show that the grass wasn’t greener on the other side. The remit for Mazzari will obviously be to keep Watford in the Premier League but if they ever want to progress as a club then they are going to need some more long term cohesion in terms of their managerial appointments. It’s going to be an interesting season at Vicarage Road next time around.
