Firstly another 3 points on the board I suppose is a positive but we certainly had to work for them, with our group qualifying was never going to be the hardest of tasks but with the win yesterday it is almost a formality now.
Jack Wilshere got his first two England goals and what a way to open your account, if there was a fan poll of greatest ever England goal then no doubt the militant Arsenal social media bandwagon would be in full force by now.
Wayne Rooney edged ever closer to at least equalising Bobby Charlton’s goalscoring record. He could have even broken it last night with 2 wasted opportunities but when he really was needed he delivered. With San Marino up next then surely it’s now a case of not if but when.
Defensively we still look like there is definitely some improvement required. Poor communication led to Slovenia’s first goal and sloppiness led to the second. It says a lot when Chris Smalling seems to be a first choice Centre Back for England. If we can’t build from the back then we really are going to be caught out against trickier opposition.
We certainly looked more decent once Lallana came on in the second half and it was interesting to see Jordan Henderson deployed at Right Back. Although Wilshere chipped in with two goals yesterday, we could still do with more input from the midfield unit in terms of goals.
Andros Townsend looked anonymous yesterday, one of his least effective games in an England shirt. Out of form for Spurs, maybe it’s time that Hodgson’s pet project was dropped to the bench.
That’s about it really as qualifiers go it was a good watch especially at this time of the year, I guess I best get myself in the ballot for EURO 2016 tickets.
