Atletico Madrid suffered their second defeat in La Liga on Saturday as they fell 2-0 to Real Sociedad at The Anoeta.
This was never going to be an easy place to go to what with Sociedad winning their last two matches and subsequently finding themselves 6th in the table going into this game. Diego Simeone’s men came here off the back of a fourth successive win in the Champions League but they were to come unstuck in the Basque Region.
In what was a goalless first half, Carlos Vela opened the scoring just 9 minutes after the restart. The Mexican international scoring from the Penalty spot after Gabi had tripped Yuri Berchiche.
And it would be a second penalty which would prove to be Atletico’s undoing, this time Vela was tripped in the area by Angel Correa which allowed Willian Jose to double the lead and wrap up an impressive win for the home side.
A costly defeat for Atletico as they now find themselves 6 points behind their cross town rivals Real with these two sides facing off once league action resumes after the international break.
