Portugal’s Euro 2016 squad announced

Portugal Manager Fernando Santos has not felt the need to call up a provisional squad after announcing his final 23 well before the May 31st deadline, of course Cristiano Ronaldo makes the squad but the question will be whether he will have to carry the team on his own again after what was a disappointing 2014 World Cup.

Previous Manchester United Renato Sanches makes the squad with his move to Bayern Munich to be completed after the tournament. Ex Premier League players Nani and more surprisingly Ricardo Quaresma make the squad. Who can forget Quaresma’s spell on loan at Chelsea, actually that should probably be who can remember?

The Premier League is represented solely by Southampton players. The defensive duo of Cedric Soares and Jose Fonte making the cut and being rewarded for an impressive 6th place finish in the English top flight.

It’s no longer the golden generation for Portugal, it’s now Cristiano Ronaldo and 22 others. The key is trying to build a team that can fit round the talent and ego of the Real Madrid superstar. Looking at the squad you would imagine that a Quarter Final berth would be deemed a relative success but the fact that they would have once again failed to land a first ever major tournament success will no doubt be a blow to Cristiano Ronaldo in his personal quest to be the World’s Number 1
