Northern Ireland’s Euro 2016 squad announced

Northern Ireland Manager Michael O’Neill has named a provisional 28 man squad for this Summer’s European Championship and will run the rule over his squad in the next two weeks to decide who will make the coveted final 23

There are 5 Premier League players with 4 of them coming in Defence, the quintet of players is completed by Southampton’s Steven Davis. It’s fair to say that there aren’t any stars in this Northern Ireland panel but that hasn’t been an issue in qualification and they will go into the tournament full of hope and optimism and with only 8 teams going home after the group stage they will certainly be looking to reach the knockout stages

Wigan’s man of the moment Will Griggs makes the final 28 and Northern Ireland fans will be hoping he is on as fire as the chant sung by Wigan fans suggests.

With only 3 goalkeepers named in the provisional squad then bar injury they will all be going to France, you would have to think that looking at the make up of the squad the fat will be trimmed from most likely Defence and at least 1 or maybe even 2 forwards. It’s going to be a tough decision for O’Neill and heartbreak for the 5 players that end up staying behind

Below is the provisional squad in full

Goalkeepers: Roy Carroll (Notts County), Michael McGovern (Hamilton), Alan McManus (St Johnstone)

Defenders: Craig Cathcart (Watford), Jonny Evans (West Brom), Gareth McAuley (West Brom), Luke McCullough (Doncaster), Conor McLaughlin (Fleetwood), Aaron Hughes (Melbourne City), Daniel Lafferty (Burnley), Michael Smith (Peterborough), Lee Hodson (MK Dons), Chris Baird (Derby County), Paddy McNair (Manchester United)

Midfielders: Steven Davis (Southampton), Oliver Norwood (Reading), Corry Evans (Blackburn), Jamie Ward (Nottingham Forest), Stuart Dallas (Leeds), Niall McGinn (Aberdeen), Shane Ferguson (Millwall), Ben Reeves (MK Dons)
