January BBC Gossip Column Debunked – Issue 15

Another week is on the horizon as we hit the halfway stage of the January transfer window, you could say that we are at the business end of all the business for this month. So with that in mind lets now take a look at all of the gossip on the backpages

As always – gossip in plain text, may views in bold

Arsenal are keen to sign Manchester United’s 28-year-old Armenian midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan as part of any deal that would take Chile forward Alexis Sanchez, 29, to Old Trafford. (Guardian) It would a replacement of sorts but not really the one that Arsenal would have hoped for, especially as he looks something of a busted flush under Jose Mourinho. Then again maybe a move away for the Armenian will do him good.

Manchester City have pulled out of a deal to sign Sanchez over wages and fees demanded by the player’s agent. (Goal) As I said yesterday, Agents are parasites

Arsenal held talks with Bordeaux attacking midfielder Malcom on Sunday and are expected to pay £40m for the Brazilian 20-year-old. (Guardian) Does that mean two in, two out with Ozil departing also?

Arsenal and Chelsea are interested in Watford’s 20-year-old Brazilian forward Richarlison. (S*n) His form has gone south with Watford. there is a good player there but I don’t think any move will happen until the Summer

Chelsea are still keen to sign a striker in January – with the loan signing of West Ham’s 29-year-old English striker Andy Carroll a possible option. (Telegraph) No way that West Ham give away Andy Carroll on loan as they look to beat the drop. Chelsea will have to look elsewhere

Crystal Palace are also in talks to sign Ipswich’s Polish keeper Bartosz Bialkowski. The Championship club want more than £4m for the 30-year-old. (S*n) The Polish keeper did not play on Saturday which has added a lot of fuel to this potential rumour.

Liverpool have dropped their interest in Monaco’s France winger Thomas Lemar after the club demanded £90m for the 22-year-old. (Times – subscription required) So the chance of him moving is less than 50/50

Borussia Dortmund are close to announcing the signing of Basel’s 22-year-old Swiss centre-back Manuel Akanji. (Ruhr Nachrichten – in German) Bad news for Manchester United then

Leicester boss Claude Puel says he does not have to worry about Algeria international Riyad Mahrez, 26, leaving this month. (Leicester Mercury) I think that is a fair enough statement

AC Milan say they will not sell their 24-year-old Spanish attacking midfielder Suso, even for 80m euros (£71m). (AC Milan website – in Italian) A.C. Milan have once again disappointed this season, can they match Suso’s ambition though

Saint-Etienne are in talks to sign Arsenal’s 32-year-old French right-back Mathieu Debuchy. (TF1 – in French) They like, Debuchy, Debuchy.

Stoke forward Saido Berahino turned up a day early for Monday’s Premier League fixture against Manchester United.(Stoke Sentinel) What an idiot.

Louis van Gaal said he “vindictively” turned down the Belgium job so that Manchester United – who treated him “terribly” – would have to keep paying him after he was sacked as manager. (Mirror) A very shrewd tactic there.
