England vs Australia a few quick thoughts

  • Marcus Rashford get him on the plane, after last nights performance there surely can’t be any doubt now as to whether or not he is in Roy Hodgson’s final 23 for next month’s European Championships
  • It took less than 3 minutes for Rashford to get on the scoresheet and subsequently become the youngest ever player to score on their England debut
  • Rashford was calm not only in the finish but the celebration as well as he side footed home a lofted pass from Raheem Sterling
  • There was delight on the faces on just about everyone in the ground from an England point of view except one man
  • That man being Daniel Sturridge. The goal from Rashford has certainly put him ahead of the Liverpool forward in the Strikers pecking order
  • With the final squad being announced on Tuesday, Sturridge is now running out of time to prove his fitness to Roy Hodgson and show that he is worthy of a seat on the plane to France
  • If he is fit, then the question will then be whether or not Hodgson decides to take 5 strikers and accommodate Sturridge in the squad as well
  • There will certainly be no doubt as to whether Wayne Rooney goes – he came off the bench to make it 2-0 to England and score his 52nd goal in an England shirt
  • Rooney’s versatility could be a key attribute in this England squad
  • He goes for sure, the question is where on the pitch will he play
  • But ultimately that’s a good dilemma to have as it gives us many options and we’re not just set to one system thanks to the personnel at hand
  • If we did learn one thing last night is that we’re a bit light at Centre Back. Is the gamble of taking only 3 going to be enough
  • Eric Dier came on as a substitute late on and his first act was to head past Fraser Forster to give Australia a goal they in truth didn’t really deserve
  • A slight blot on the copybook for England last night in not getting a clean sheet
  • As for Dier, the fact he hasn’t played at Centre Back for so long may be detrimental to him if he is called upon to play there this Summer
  • You would imagine he would be given 90 minutes there against Portugal to familiarise himself with that position again
  • In the middle of the park both Jordan Henderson and Danny Drinkwater played and it’d fair to say they are fighting over the same spot in the final 23
  • On the basis of last night’s performance Henderson has just edged it, it seems as if Hodgson will be going with familiarity here which in my opinion is a bit harsh on Drinkwater after he had such an excellent season for Leicester
  • So with the squad being named on Tuesday we now have a better idea of who will be going to France and that must now certainly include Marcus Rashford
  • Portugal on Thursday is up next and by then we will know Roy Hodgson’s final 23
