- So we know the names of the two teams that will take part in the 2017 Champions League Final in early June
- Cardiff is going to have a Latino vibe to it as Juventus will be paired with Real Madrid
- Real Madrid will look to be the first team to win back to back titles in the Champions League era
- And not only that a 12th victory at this level
- They were made to work for their place in the final last night though against a dogged Atletico side
- Then again that was not to be unexpected from Diego Simeone’s men but unfortunately for them they left themselves to much to do in the first leg
- Coming into the return tie at the Vicente Calderon, Atletico had a 3-0 deficit to overturn
- Something that is not impossible, but it was going to be a big ask
- That said they got themselves off to the best possible start when Saul Niguez opened the scoring after just 12 minutes
- The Spanish international’s header rifled past Kaylor Navas to give the home side
- And that hope would increase just four minutes later when they were awarded a Penalty
- Antoine Griezmann’s history from the spot against Real is perhaps as good as he would like, but he made no mistake last night
- A display of nerves as his cheeky effort dropped into the net and made it 2-0 on the night
- Atletico were now just one goal away from levelling the tie
- Real would need an away goal to take the sting out of the game and thankfully from their point of view they delivered that just before the break
- Isco who has really stepped up to the mark when required, chipped in with another key goal
- Three minutes before the break he would halve the deficit on the night after turning in a rebound
- Firstly there was neat work from Karim Benzema who played Toni Kroos in for a shot
- The German’s effort cannoned back to Isco and the former Malaga man made no mistake
- That goal all but put Real in the final and knocked the wind out of Atletico’s sails
- Atletico were now going to require another three goals in just over 45 minutes
- The difficult task now became all but impossible
- With Real getting the all important away goal, the game fizzled out in the second half
- Kevin Gamiero had chances to unsettle the nerves of Real but spurned what few opportunities that were presented to him
- Real could afford to sit on their away goal and that is exactly what they did
- They take the step to the final while for Atletico questions will now be asked as to whether or not this is the end of the cycle
- Will Diego Simeone move on to Inter Milan
- Will Antoine Griezmann move on to Manchester United
- These are questions that won’t be answered just yet but it will certainly make for an interesting Summer
