Wolfsburg vs Real Madrid a few quick thoughts

• No one saw that one coming did they
• The rank outsiders beat The Galacticos in arguably Wolfsburg biggest ever result
• It seems as if Real Madrid had an El Clasico hangover last night and will have their work cut out in the 2nd leg
• They had chances early on with Cristiano Ronaldo having a goal disallowed for what was a tight offside decision and then a Penalty claim turned down after Gareth Bale was seemingly fouled in the box
• But that was as good as it got for Zinedine Zidane’s side as the rest of the night belonged to Wolfsburg
• If Real’s Penalty call went against them then Wolfsburg one went for them
• Casemiro was clumsy in the tackle and made contact with Andre Schurrle, a bit of a controversial decision but Wolfsburg weren’t going to waste this opportunity
• Ricardo Rodriguez stepped up and slotted past Kaylor Navas to send the 30,000 fans into raptures
• They would have been in a state of delirium just minutes later when Max Arnold was on hand to finish a well worked move and doubled Wolfsburg advantage
• Julian Draxler and Andre Schurrle were a constant menace throughout the game as they took the game to a lethargic Real
• Schurrle had a guilt edge chance to make it 3-0 on the night and almost put the tie out of reach but he fired over the bar from inside the box
• Will not getting the 3rd goal and killing off Los Blancos come back to haunt them next Tuesday
• It certainly was a night to forget for Real and Marcelo in particular who antics earned him the ire of Wolfsburg boss Dieter Hecking. The Brazilian Left Backs antics managed to get hero Max Arnold booked while Marcelo escaped any censure
• As Hecking said afterwards “There isn’t any need for Marcelo to do that” and quite right he is too
• Real are now going to have to turn on the style in the 2nd leg but this Wolfsburg team have been saving their best performances for the Champions League this season. I think we are in for a treat at The Bernabeu next week.
