- A 40th Goal of the season for Cristiano Ronaldo as Real Madrid eased into the Quarter Finals of the Champions League
- Already having a 2-0 advantage from the first leg after winning away in Rome, the Madrid side were very much the favourites to advance from the tie going into last night’s 2nd leg
- They started quickly with a whole host of chances and Roma knew they were going to be in for a busy night
- That said they did create chances of their own through Edin Dzeko and Mohamed Salah
- But you felt if they were going to have any chance of progressing they were going to have to score first at The Bernabeu
- With the scores level at half time, time was certainly getting way from Luciano Spalletti’s side and you felt that the small opportunity that Roma had had then evaporated
- Two goals in quick succession for Real then hammered the nail in the coffin as far as the tie was concerned
- Ronaldo putting the hosts in front with that aforementioned 40th Goal which was then soon followed by James Rodriguez getting on the score sheet
- Gareth Bale made his first appearance since January. He now needs to make sure he gets a good run of games under his belt. His first target will be making sure he gets back into the Real side. The next being he is fully fit to lead Wales into EURO 2016 battle come June.
- It means Zinedine Zidane has only lost 1 game since taking charge of Real Madrid and with the race for La Liga seemingly already over you wouldn’t bet against Zidane and Real focussing all their energies into winning an 11th European Cup/Champions League
- As for Roma they now have to focus on making sure they are back in the competition next season. 7 wins in a row in Serie A certainly has helped them as of late as they now find themselves 3rd in Serie A. If they can keep that form up then they will easily be in the pot for next season’s group stage draw
