Everton vs Arsenal a few quick thoughts

  • Arsenal keep their title hopes alive with a comfortable win over Everton this Lunchtime
  • Much was made before the game that it was a must win scenario for Arsenal if they had any hopes of still being in the title race and they manage to clear this hurdle with ease
  • Everton have blown hot and cold all season and after their excellent F.A. Cup win last Saturday over Chelsea many felt that this game was going to be a difficult one for Arsene Wenger’s side
  • But for all their good work in the cups, Everton reverted to type with another below par performance in front of their own fans
  • They actually started the better and Seamus Coleman hit the outside of the post after the first minute when he connected with a hard and fast corner
  • A minute later and Arsenal had hit the woodwork themselves through Danny Welbeck
  • Then after 7 minutes an almost peak Arsenal goal. Great one touch build up play from especially Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez and it was Sanchez who played a killer pass to Welbeck who had the time and composure to slot past Joel Robles and into an empty net.
  • First blood to Arsenal and a fantastic way to go in front, a really class goal
  • That knocked the wind out of Everton and Arsenal were getting through The Toffees Defence like a knife through hot butter
  • Alexis Sanchez should have had a Penalty but he did himself out of one by delaying going down, he tried to stay up as long as possible and then by the time he did hit the deck, Mark Clattenburg had decided against pointing the spot.
  • Everton started to come into the game more but struggled to break down a well drilled Arsenal back line
  • Then the killer blow, Everton attacked in the hope of getting an equaliser before half time
  • The move break down and Hector Bellerin played a long range pass to Alex Iwobi who had acres of space to roll the ball through the legs of the hapless Robles and double Arsenal’s advantage and pretty much wrap up all 3 points
  • Mo Besic was at fault for not committing to the tackle in the build up to Arsenal’s second
  • I think he’s a bit of a liability in all fairness and Roberto Martinez obviously did to as he took him off in place of John Stones at half time
  • Martinez then adopted a three at the back formation but truth be told it had very little effect as Arsenal were dominant in all areas of the park
  • There was a slight scare when David Ospina needed treatment and he was put to work straight after when Phil Jagielka had a chance but it ended up cannonning off his shoulder and over the bar
  • That was a lucky escape for Arsenal but in fairness that was as about as troubled as they were to have got for the rest of the game
  • They saw the game out with ease and with that restore their hopes of winning the title
  • Although they still have a lot to do, they way in which they won will certainly give them a massive boost of confidence and take the pressure off of Arsene Wenger
  • As for Roberto Martinez it’s another Premier League defeat, you get the feeling if it wasn’t for the fact that they’ve reached the Cup Semi Finals the pressure he would be under a lot more pressure
  • I think personally he may have to win the Cup to make sure he is in the job next season, it really has been a Jekyll and Hyde season for Everton
  • Then again you could say the same about Arsenal
