Chelsea vs PSG a few quick thoughts

  • Firstly before I give any thoughts can I just have a quick rant about Michael Owen and the fact he kept referring to PSG as ‘Paris’. No Michael that’s just wrong it’s like me referring to Manchester United as simply ‘Manchester’ any way rant over
  • PSG deliver a knock out blow to Chelsea in the Champions League for a second season in a row
  • With the tie still in the balance thanks to John Obi Mikel’s away goal the question was could Chelsea use that to their advantage in the 2nd leg
  • Diego Costa nearly gave them the lead in the tie within 2 minutes but his shot was well saved by Kevin Trapp
  • Zlatan Ibrahimovic thought he has put the away side in front but his effort was ruled out for Offside early on
  • The game had a great energy with Chelsea quick out the traps and really looking to take the game to PSG
  • But it was first blood to the Parisiens as Gary Cahill was caught out of position and this allowed Adrien Rabiot the chance to ghost in and slot home. An almost Frank Lampard style goal with a run from Midfield
  • The away goal advantage that Chelsea had was now ruled out and they would have to now score three unanswered goals if they wanted to advance in 90 Minutes
  • But they gave themselves the best possible chance as Diego Costa slotted home after excellent build up play. A neat interchange of passes was rewarded with a goal from Costa and now all they had to do was score 1 more unanswered goal to take the tie to Extra Time
  • Stamford Bridge was seemingly buzzing as the pendulum was seeming to swing in Chelsea’s direction but at half time the score was still 1-1 on the night
  • Although some boos were reserved at half time for Eden Hazard by the home fans as he committed the cardinal sin of exchanging shirts at the break with an opposition player
  • After the break the next goal was going to be crucial in dictating the direction of the tie
  • Guus Hiddink had an interesting decision to make, either go for it and try and find those goals or sit back and try and hit PSG on the counter
  • But his best laid plans were thrown out the window with the injury and subsequent substitution of Diego Costa
  • After Costa’s departure it seemed to take the wind out of Chelsea’s sails as they looked to at least take the game to PSG
  • But then disaster struck for the home side
  • Angel Di Maria was fortunate as his attempted neat flick managed to fall at the feet of Thiago Motta who sent the ball back to Di Maria, this time the Argentine was in plenty of space out wide to put in an inch perfect cross for who else?
  • Yes Zlatan Ibrahimovic, he managed to exact the perfect revenge for getting sent off here last season by striking the killer blow in Chelsea’s Champions League campaign
  • That goal was game over for the 2012 winners
  • With the tie wrapped up the game fell a bit flat but it was to get worse for Chelsea as Eden Hazard also had to depart through injury
  • With an F.A. Cup tie against Everton at the Weekend and the prospect of neither Hazard or Costa playing it could also mean their only chance of silverware this season has disappeared
  • Chelsea won’t be playing in the Champions League next season and without the aforementioned absentees this could also scupper their outside chance of a Europa League so it looks like there won’t be any European Football at Stamford Bridge for the 2016/17 campaign.
  • A bad result but also what could prove to be some costly injuries for Guus Hiddink’s side
  • While PSG go into the Quarter Final draw alongside Real Madrid, Wolfsburg and Benfica
