World Cup Qualifying – European Section Group B Goals

Group B is very nearly done and dusted after last night’s result across the continent. Table toppers Switzerland have booked themselves at least a play-off berth after victory in St. Gallen last night. Andorra provided the opposition but went home empty handed after a relatively comfortable 3-0 home win for the Swiss.

The deadlock would not be broken until the 43rd minute when Haris Seferovic would open the scoring and the Benfica forward would then add his second of the night on 63 minutes to all but wrap victory. That however would not be the end of the goalscoring.

Juventus’ Stephan Lichtsteiner would add a third just four minutes later to secure a job well done for Vladimir Petkovic’s men as they cleared this particularly hurdle to stay three points clear of current European champions Portugal.

Portugal have kept the pressure on the group leaders though after a 5-1 win over the Faroe Islands in Porto. Who else but Cristiano Ronaldo would grab the headlines after he scored a hat-trick last night, he has now taken his tally of international goals to 78.

Cristiano Ronaldo only needs 7 more goals for Portugal to be the highest ever European goalscorer in international football. His hat-trick last night now puts him clear in second with 78 goals – just 6 behind Ferenc Puskas and with the rate at which he finds the net you would not put it past him adding another notable record to his name.

He was not the only player to get on the scoresheet for the Euro 2016 winners as William Carvalho who never did end up moving to West Ham made it 3-1 just before the hour when at one point the Faroe Islands threatened to make the game interesting with a goal to make it 2-1 just before the break.

While Norwich’s Nelson Oliveira would wrap up the scoring five minutes from time to make it 5-1 to Portugal.

While in the other Group B game Hungary kept their very slim hopes of a play-off place alive with a 3-1 home win over Latvia
