Wednesday Football a few quick thoughts

  • Barcelona’s run of bad form continues as it’s now just one win in five for Luis Enrique’s side
  • More importantly they have relinquished their grip on the Champions League trophy
  • This means that no one has managed to win back to back competitions in the modern era
  • With Atletico having an away goal in their account a 1-0 victory would have been enough for them to progress and through Antoine Griezmann they were on course to do exactly that through his first half strike
  • And two minutes from time Diego Simeone’s side went one better as Griezmann doubled Atletico’s advantage from the spot to dump the holders out and kill off any hopes that they Catalan side may have had of winning the treble this season
  • Again it was another blank for The MSN. That must be some concern though for Barcelona
  • They now have to make sure they don’t splutter to the end of the La Liga season and end up throwing away what looked like an uncatchable lead at the top
  • In the other Semi Final, Bayern completed the lineup with a 2-2 draw with Benfica in Lisbon
  • Arturo Vidal once again was on the score sheet to add to his goal in the first leg and this time it was a vital away goal
  • But this time Bayern were hauled back through Raul Jimenez but Benfica would have still needed to score twice to progress to the Semi’s
  • Their task was made even harder once Thomas Muller put the German champions back in front early in the Second Half and the tie was as good as done
  • Talisca managed to level on the night but it wasn’t going to be enough and Pep Guardiola could now possibly meet his future employers Manchester City in the Semi Finals
  • In the F.A. Cup it was a great send off for Upton Park as Manchester United won 2-1 to progress to the Semi Finals and a trip to Wembley to face off against Everton next Weekend
  • It seems like Cup or bust for both Louis Van Gaal and Roberto Martinez so their is now going to be an extra impetus to the encounter
  • As for last night wonderkid Marcus Rashford opened the scoring with a sensational strike early in the second half. If he keeps that up then an England call up can only be a year or so away
  • Marouane Fellaini doubled United’s advantage and all but continued United’s Road To Wembley
  • James Tomkins pulled one back to try and setup a dramatic grandstand finish at The Boleyn Ground but it wasn’t to be
  • West Ham now will have to make sure they don’t slip out the Top 6 to make sure a promising season doesn’t end unrewarded
  • As for Crystal Palace vs Everton – awful
