Unofficial Football World Championship – Uruguay 3 Venezuela 0

The one good thing about the international break is that it’s time for another UFWC title defence and that is exactly what took place on Thursday night as holders Uruguay took on the challenge of Venezuela and it’s one that they eased past with a 3-0 win in Montevideo.

The holders with have gone into this game as clear favourites and although they were tested early on they overcame the test of Venezuela with flying colours. Luis Suarez turned in a man of the match performance and although he didn’t get on the scoresheet he was a constant menace throughout.

Nicolas Lodeiro put the holders in front and then there was a double from PSG’s Edinson Cavani to not only mean the UFWC title has been retained but also another all important three points in their bid to qualify for the World Cup in 2018 which takes place in Russia.

We’re now at the halfway stage of South American Qualifying and although that win keeps Uruguay at the top it’s still very tight with only 3 points separating the top 5 and more importantly only the top 4 nations will qualify automatically, so there will still be many twists and turns in the remaining 9 matches.

Uruguay will look to not only qualify for the World Cup but also to go there as UFWC holders and their next challenge is against Colombia on Tuesday. Colombia currently sit third in qualifying and this is not going to be an easy task for Uruguay, if they can come away from that unscathed then they will no doubt be delighted.

The win over Venezuela now sees them sit joint 10th in the all time UFWC Rankings. You earn 1 ranking point for every win you have as holders with Uruguay recording their 25th point on Thursday, a win against Colombia would see them then take 10th place outright.

Here’s all the highlights from Thursday
