Uruguay overcame their second title defence of the UFWC crown in the early hours of the morning with a slender 1-0 win over Peru. The game also doubled up as a South American World Cup qualification game and that win now sees Uruguay top the group after previous leaders Ecuador were served their first defeat at the hands of Colombia.
It was Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez who were on the scoresheet last week as they managed to come from 2-0 down and salvage a 2-2 draw against Brazil to make sure they didn’t lose their title in their first defence and it was Cavani who was on the scoresheet in the early hours of the morning, his solitary effort was the difference as Uruguay overcame the challenge of Peru.
After a goalless first half, Cavani managed to break the deadlock after 51 minutes when he was played through by strike partner Suarez and he certainly wasn’t going to turn down the invitation as he smashed home to put La Celeste in front
Defeat for Peru sees them sit 8th in the qualification group table and they are already are starting to find themselves adrift of the play off spot which Colombia are currently frequenting. It’s a 6 point gap between Colombia and Peru but with 12 games to left of this phase then there is still plenty of Football left to be played
With Uruguay now coming through these two title matches unscathed the focus now shifts to preparation for the centenary Copa America in June. Before that starts they have scheduled a friendly with Trinidad and Tobago which will be the next title match. This will take part in late May, if they can get past Trinidad then the UFWC crown will be defended in the Copa America for the second year in a row
If it does make it to the Copa America again then the first title match will be Uruguay vs Mexico but with Uruguay’s holding of the crown the sad news is that it won’t be competed for during EURO 2016. When will the South American grip on the title be relinquished?
