Tuesday EFL Cup action a few quick thoughts

  • Ben Woodburn. Remember the name
  • To be fair I doubt you could forget it as his name has just about been everywhere in the past 24 hours
  • But rightly so as his first ever goal for Liverpool made him the club’s youngest ever scorer and launched the Welsh youngster into super stardom.
  • It was his goal that secured Liverpool’s win against Leeds in the EFL Cup Quarter Finals as they progressed with a 2-0 win over The Championship outfit
  • The youngster made his debut with a substitute outing against Sunderland and that in itself would have capped off a fantastic few days but the goal in front his own fans is simply what dreams are made of
  • It was the same scoreline as their win over Sunderland on Saturday and once again they had to leave it late to get the job done
  • Like Saturday Divock Origi was on hand to break the deadlock and calm the nerves around Anfield
  • Two important goals in the space of three days from the Belgian international. His contribution as if late can not be understated.
  • For Liverpool it was once again a much changed side not quite the 11 changes which were made in the round before but it still showed where exactly this competition lies in the list of Jurgen Klopp’s priorities
  • That said it didnt list that high in Leeds’ priorities further by the looks of things
  • Garry Monk also took the opportunity to make wholesale changes with the aim to get out of The Championship being the sole focus
  • For Leeds fans that would arguably bring some disappointment that they didn’t have a real crack at Liverpool
  • But they would season that disappointment should they end up in the play offs and beyond come the end of the campaign
  • The Yorkshire side did have chances to go ahead but failed to put Liverpool to the sword when it mattered
  • That extra bit of quality finally shining through for the Merseysiders
  • They will now await Wednesday’s results to see who they will face in the Semi Finals
  • Also in the hat are Hull City
  • The welcome distraction of cup football continues for Mike Phelan’s men after victory over Newcastle last night
  • And they did it the hard way as it took 120 minutes, penalties and playing a portion of the game with 10 men
  • Newcastle laid onslaught to Hull’s goals but they spurned so many chances before the game went to spot kicks
  • And they would be even more wasteful then as they missed three of their efforts to defend The Tigers through to the next stage
  • The game may not have been pretty and Hull certainly rode their luck at times but they will now fancy their chances of going all the way to Wembley in February
