Is This Tottenham’s Most Important Game Of The Season?

They saying goes that there is no rest for the wicked and it turns out there is no rest for Tottenham either. Just 48 hours after their 1-0 defeat at home to Manchester City, Mauricio Pochettino will be sending his players into battle once more.

The theatre of war this time around is at the London Stadium while it is not league points that are up for grabs, instead it is a place in the Carabao Cup Quarter-finals which is offer as crosstown rivals West Ham stand in their way of making their hopes a reality.

It may only be a Pre-Christmas cup clash, but at the same time it does beg the question as to whether this is already Tottenham’s most important game of the season. With their European exploits not going to plan the chances of the North London outfit earning silverware in this campaign has been diminished.

Therefore it is fair to say that the clash with West Ham is one that takes on extra importance, if the stakes were high when the draw was made last month then they will be even higher after recent events for Spurs.

Much has been made of a club that is supposedly in crisis and although that it is not necessarily the case, the fact that their stadium woes are still ongoing is something that is not really doing the club any favours at the moment as they start to outstay their welcome at Wembley.

Recent Champions League defeats have meant that the likelihood of Thursday night European action is one that is once again on the horizon, or dare I say Spurs could find themselves dumped out after finishing bottom of their group.

Whisper it quietly but that might not necessarily be a bad thing, especially if it means missing out on the Thursday/Sunday axis of evil when it comes to fixture scheduling. At the same time, Tottenham are currently having schedule issues of their own.

This is the second of four games in the space of over a week, something that is going to be a real test to a Tottenham squad that as we all know by now they passed up on the opportunity to add any extra personnel over the course of the Summer.

Whether that is a decision that bites them is one that remains to be seen, at the same time West Ham will not only want to exact revenge for their recent league defeat at the same ground but they will also be smelling blood due to Tottenham’s potential fatigue coming into this game.

Mauricio Pochettino will have to weigh just what is the most important of the three upcoming clashes and consider how many eggs to put in each of his baskets. Take this competition too lightly tonight and the only realistic trophy left on the horizon is the F.A. Cup.

Whether you feel they have to win silverware to progress is up to you, but there is certainly no denying a trophy this season will halt any fears of backwards momentum. It maybe Halloween tonight, so with that in mind lets hope there is a treat and not a trick instore for Tottenham this evening.
