Tottenham vs Watford – Match Preview

Tottenham head coach Mauricio Pochettino is hopeful that midfielder Dele Alli will be available, despite complaining of dizziness against Norwich in midweek.

Ryan Mason has recovered from an ankle injury, but Jan Vertonghen and Clinton Njie are both out with knee problems.

Nathan Ake returns for Watford, having been ineligible to play against his parent club Chelsea on Wednesday.

Miguel Britos and Etienne Capoue have both been ill and will be assessed.

Editor’s Note: Tottenham showed their potential title credentials with a comfortable home win over Norwich on Tuesday they now have to make sure they stay in the hunt by dealing with a potentially tricky task in the way of the Watford.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side weren’t really tested on Tuesday and they had the perfect start after Dele Alli put them in front after only 2 minutes from there on in they never really looked back as the win moved up to 3rd in the Premier League 5 points from leaders Leicester and ahead of nearest rivals Arsenal on Goal Difference.

Tottenham didn’t purchase the new Forward last month that many felt they required for them to really challenge between now and the season but on Tuesday’s evidence they really didn’t need one as Harry Kane was the inside of a post away from getting a hat-trick.

That transfer talk will have to be put on the back burner for now and now will see how strong the Tottenham squad is if they are going to compete in 3 fronts between now and May but first they have to focus on a Watford side that they just squeezed past at Vicarage Road the last time these two sides met.

Heung Min-Son’s late Goal was the winner that day but arguably it was Goal Line Technology that was the difference that Afternoon as Ben Watson’s effort wasn’t given. It was as close to not being a Goal as possible and had we not had the Technology then it probably would have been given.

The luck wasn’t on Watford’s side that Afternoon and they will be looking to get their revenge at White Hart Lane this Afternoon. On Wednesday they battled to a 0-0 draw against Champions Chelsea which saw them move up to 9th in the table

That Evening they had Heurelho Gomes to thank as his string of saves kept Chelsea at bay, if Costel Pantilimon being purchased was to add some competition and to keep Gomes on his toes than the plan certainly worked on Wednesday night.

Watford are just 7 points off the magical 40 point marker so can’t quite afford to down tools just yet, not that Manager Quique Sanchez Flores would allow them to. That said they still need to make sure they get a few more points for they can celebrate a job well done. That job being ensuring Premier League survival.

Much will be made of the strike duo of Odion Ighalo and Troy Deeney, Ighalo got on the scoresheet the last time these two sides met. He was almost a battering ram as he made difficult work for a Tottenham back 3 that day, this Afternoon Ighalo and Deeney will certainly fancy their chances against Kevin Wimmer.

Tottenham now start an all important couple of months, there some big fixtures coming up but they need to make sure they don’t take Watford for granted. If they give Watford the respect they deserve there’s no reason why they can’t win this one and if results go there way close the gap at the top of the table. A Home win for me.
