Tottenham vs Swansea – Premier League Match Preview

Tottenham will once again look to earn their first Premier League win at Wembley as they play host to Swansea later this evening, they may have failed to win here in their first two attempts but they will be set in good stead after an impressive win over Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday night as they ran out 3-1 winners against the German outfit to give themselves the perfect start to this season’s Champions League exploits.

Not only that but Mauricio Pochettino‘s men will have their tails up after making light work of Everton at Goodison Park last Saturday. The final scoreline may have only been a 3-0 win but in fairness it could and probably should have been a lot more. Whether this was due to the fact that Everton failed to turn up or Tottenham were irresisitble form can be debated but Harry Kane will certainly be glad that we are in the month of September.

After a barren August he has now found the net on four occasions in the past week. A brace against Everton was then added with the same haul against Borussia Dortmund. Those two goals against Paul Bosz’s men has made a whole host of pundits sit up and take notice as the England international has truly announced himself on the biggest stage.

The questions are now invariably whether or not Tottenham can match the players ambitions, this is a player that will not only want to compete for trophies but also win them. Outsiders are saying that he will eventually have to move on in which to do so but the more this striker can keep scoring important goals for his club then there is absolutely no reason why he would need to look for pastures new.

One forward that has moved on recently was Fernando Llorente, he swapped Swansea for Tottenham on the final day of the transfer window and made his debut via a short cameo in Wednesday’s European exploits. Just how much Swansea will miss him and Gylfi Sigurdsson is something that is still being debated but on the evidence of last Sunday you would have to say quite a lot.

Paul Clement did some final day business of his own after landing both former Swan Wilfried Bony and also Portuguese starlet Renato Sanches but it is fair to say that their contributions were non existent in their defeat to Newcastle last Sunday. In fairness to Bony he came on as a subsitute after 69 minutes to replace the Bayern Munich loanee but on the evidence of his debut the Euro 2016 winner Sanches is going to have to raise his game in this division.

The game against Newcastle was something of a culture shock for the former Benfica midfielder, it was definitely a debut to forget as he failed to have any impact on the game whatsoever, countlessly caught in possession and giving away the ball time after time meant that Paul Clement had to change tact and haul what was meant to be his star signing off with just over 20 minutes remaining.

Minutes later Swansea would concede what would prove to be the defining goal of the game. Jamaal Lascelles was left unmarked in the box and he headed home from short range to give Newcastle all three points. That would prove to be Swansea’s third blank of the season, the only goals they have scored were against Crystal Palace who themselves have failed to score a goal as of yet.

That means with Swansea being incredibly goal shy it should prove little worry for what is now a trio of former Ajax centre backs at Tottenham. Davinson Sanchez was given his first start at Goodison Park and it looks like it has made what was already an imperious defensive partnerhsip now something more resembling an impenetrable wall.

With that in mind and the fact that Tottenham have displaced the Wembley hoodoo at least as far as Europe goes then I think this evening will be the one in which we can finally stop talking about stadium jinxes once and for all. I think this will be a second straight league win for Spurs and one that will see them level on points with Manchester United for at least a day or so. Home win for me.
