Do Tottenham Need Right Back Reinforcement?

As we all know by now Tottenham sold Right Back Kyle Walker this summer and if there was ever evidence that life goes on without him then it was never more apparent then last Sunday then when his near namesake Kyle-Walker Peters earned the man of the match award after his display against Newcastle.

A performance which was all the more impressive considering that the player who was part of the England Under 20 World Cup winning squad last season was making his Premier League debut. The circumstances in which he made his debut where not ideal due to Kieran Trippier picking up an injury against Juventus at the start of this month.

Question marks were understandably raised as to whether or not Walker-Peters was ready to be tested at this particular level but it is the kind of question that can only be answered by actually giving a player an opportunity to show what he can do.

An opportunity that the youngster took with both hands and one that arguably could save the club £25m or so as Kyle Walker’s void looks set to be filled via combination of both Walker-Peters and Trippier with the latter now assuming the right back berth when available for selection.

Therefore it comes as some surprise that reports today (Wednesday) claim that Tottenham are very close to landing Serge Aurier from PSG. The Ivorian has been displaced in the first eleven after the arrival of Dani Alves and is attracting attention from a handful of Premier League clubs.

One of them is believed to be Tottenham, but with that in mind the question is after Kyle Walker Peters performance on Sunday, is this necessarily an area that they need to strengthen as the potential arrival of Aurier would leave the club then over subscribed in this particular department.

I guess had Trippier not been unavailable last Sunday and played against Newcastle then there would be a greater clamour to bring someone in for this area of the pitch as Walker-Peters would still be the great unknown but now he has shown what he is capable of it may well change Tottenham’s transfer strategy.

Now it would be easy to jump the gun and say “well Walker-Peters has only played one top flight game” and you would be correct in all fairness but if someone of the likes of Aurier were to join the club before the end of the month then the rapid progress of the 20 year old would be halted over night.

It would create a scenario where we would have too many right backs fighting over one position, now it may well seem prudent to be overstocked rather than overstocked but it is going to be hard enough to give the right amount of game time to two players let alone three.

It also would beg the question as to just who would be identified as the clubs first choice back between Trippier and Aurier, would Daniel Levy be prepared to pay £25m for just a squad player in an area that is not really the top priority right now.

I don’t think any Tottenham fan would complain if Aurier swapped the French capital for the English capital for the simple reason that it would mean that Spurs have finally spent some money this month but they may well point to other areas of the pitch as more pressing priorities.

You could argue that reinforcements at Centre Back and in Midfield are more pertinent at present although in fairness these look like they are trying to be addressed with Davinson Sanchez and Ross Barkley repeatedly linked with the club.

I think ultimately the club are damned if they do and damned if they don’t. Purchase Aurier and people like myself will say he is not really required, while not signing him will mean fans will complain about not drafting another player in.

It’s a scenario where whatever happens I don’t think the whole Tottenham fanbase are going to be happy but then again when are there. At the end of the day as far as transfer scenarios go, I guess it is a nice problem to have when you have so many players competing for one place, only problem is they will all then want to play.

I guess with just two weeks to go before the end of the transfer window to go, Tottenham fans will be waiting patiently or perhaps not to see what actual activity there is surrounding the club. Only come September will we truly know if the right decisions have been made.
