Tottenham have signed Belgium defender Toby Alderweireld from Atletico Madrid on a deal until 2020.
The 26-year-old was on loan at Southampton last season and made 26 Premier League appearances.
Saints may take legal action as they believed they had an option to buy the player for £6.8m unless Atletico paid £1.5m to buy back that clause.
Alderweireld said he was “very proud” to be a Tottenham player and hoped “to have a wonderful time with this team”.
Editor’s Note: This is now Tottenham’s 3rd defensive signing in the off season so they obviously recognised this area of the pitch as one of the weaknesses of last season. We now seem to be fully stocked in the Centre Back department so would imagine that Kaboul and Chiriches will be departing before the season starts in August (well that’s the hope of many Tottenham fans anyway). Alderweireld who can also play at Right Back or Defensive Midfield will also join the Belgian contingent of possible centre back partner Jan Vertonghen, Moussa Dembele and Nacer Chadli.
So for defensive personnel we seem to be now sorted, now it’s just a case of getting a Centre Midfielder in and freshening up the attack line, promising business from Spurs already this summer let’s just hope this isn’t the last of it. Come On You Spurs
