Real Madrid asserted their dominance at the top of La Liga with a win against Sporting Gijon yesterday but they were certainly made to work for it. Many would have felt that this would be a routine win considering Sporting conceded 10 when these two met at The Bernabeu last season.
Real who are without long term absentees Toni Kroos and Gareth Bale got off to the perfect start when Cristiano Ronaldo logged an early brace but then not only the goals dry up for them but they also allowed the away side back in the game.
Carlos Carmona halved the deficit after 33 minutes and then the game took an unexpected twist with just 13 minutes left on the clock. The visitors were awarded a penalty after Nacho hauled down Victor Rodriguez in the box and could they now go on and earn an unlikely point?
The answer was no as Duje Cop’s penalty was nothing short of awful. He blazed high and wide as Real Madrid were given a massive get out of jail card. That would be the final twist in the tale as Los Blancos managed to grind out the win and build a 7 point gap over Barcelona who play later today.
Perhaps a fortunate win but they will certainly have to play better when they face Barcelona in El Clasico next Saturday
