Real Madrid have already picked up their second trophy of the season and with that Spanish bragging rights once again as they secured the Spanish Supercup last night with a 2-0 win over Barcelona, a result that saw the tie in a 5-1 aggregate scoreline to Los Blancos.
Barcelona came into this game knowing that they had to score three times to have any chance of lifting a 13th Spanish Supercup victory but instead they were shut out at The Bernabeu as Zinedine Zidane’s men went on to secure a 10th trophy in this competition for Real Madrid.
Ernesto Valverde is still searching for his first official victory as manager of Barcelona and will now be under pressure to deliver that this weekend as the start of the La Liga season is very nearly upon us. The man who took over from Luis Enrique will at least be glad he does not have to face these particular opponents for a while.
Real Madrid were without Cristiano Ronaldo but it need not have mattered as they were ahead within five minutes, Marco Asensio who bagged a goal in Sunday 1st leg, opened the scoring and it was a goal that in all fairness ended this tie as a contest.
Ronaldo scored with an absolute rocket of a strike to make it 2-1 on Sunday and Asensio’s goal that broke the deadlock was just as good. He let fly from fully 25 yards and it was the kind of shot that was in and soon as it left his foot.
Barcelona would now have to score four with conceding to force extra time but the odds were all but insurmountable at this point and by the time Karim Benzema added a second before the break it really was all over in terms of a competitive fixture.
The pace of the game fizzled out after the break as both teams knew the destiny of the trophy and therefore decided to save all their efforts for the weekend’s La Liga fixtures. Real Madrid have the more difficult task as they take on Valencia while Barcelona face Real Betis.
