Premier League Sunday a few quick thoughts

  • Once again the headlines from yesterday’s action are dominated by Jose Mourinho
  • The ‘Special One’ was reacquainted with the stands at Old Trafford yesterday after John Moss sent him off for kicking a water bottle
  • The reaction from the Portuguese manager came after Paul Pogba was dived for simulation in the area
  • Replays suggested that it was the correct decision as Mark Noble did not make contact with Pogba in the area
  • But Mourinho felt otherwise and paid for his outburst as he had to watch the remainder of the game from on high
  • Does that take the focus off of United’s failure to win?
  • Perhaps so as they have given up more ground to the quartet of title chasing teams with them now 11 points off of top spot. Surely their title hopes are all but evaporated
  • That is due to the fact that they had to come from behind to salvage a point against West Ham yesterday
  • Diafra Sahko’s early strike caught United cold with The Hammers going ahead after just two minutes
  • Zlatan Ibrahimovic was somewhat to blame for their goal but he atoned for his error by levelling matters just 20 minutes later
  • But it was to prove another frustrating day in front of their own fans as again they were held to a draw at Old Trafford
  • The fourth successive one in the league for United as they now have a job on their hands to even make the top four at the end of the season
  • For Slaven Bilic’s side it was a well earned point and one that gives them the tiniest bit of daylight between them and Hull in 18th place
  • They still are looking for a first win in four while United have won just once in their last seven
  • In North London, Arsenal eventually ran out comfortable winners over Bournemouth to make sure the Top 3 didn’t pull clear
  • They were gifted their opener by Bournemouth’s decision to play out from the back
  • That spectacularly backfired as an errand pass found Alexis Sanchez who then had ample time to steer the ball past Adam Federici to put The Gunners ahead
  • But Bournemouth did manage to get on level terms after Nacho Monreal bundled over Callum Wilson to give The Cherries a spot kick
  • Wilson himself stepped up and placed the ball home to send the two teams level going into the break
  • But Arsenal would quickly once again superiority when Theo Walcott restored Arsenal’s lead
  • Monreal this time on hand to place the perfect cross for the England international and it was 2-1
  • The home side did have a couple of scares namely when Petr Cech had to make a crucial save from former Arsenal youngster Benik Afobe
  • After riding out that wave of pressure, Arsenal would go on to secure all three points when Alexis Sanchez scored in injury time
  • A routine win but an all important one that keeps Arsene Wenger’s side hot on the heels of the leading trio
  • Everton missed a chance to go 6th after defeat at St Mary’s
  • That meant it wasn’t a happy homecoming for Ronald Koeman
  • And it wasn’t a happy start for Everton either as Southampton were in front after just 41 seconds
  • Charlie Austin was on hand to head home after an assist from 19 year old debutant Josh Sims
  • And Austin would have made it two before the break were it not for the acrobatics of Maarten Stekelenburg
  • That win sees Southampton move into the top half
  • While Everton have failed to win in their last three matches and the performances as of late must be a worry for Koeman who was given somewhat of a mixed reception on his return to the South Coast
  • And in the lunchtime kick off an own goal by goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes gave Stoke City a deserved win as Watford were beaten at home for the first time since August.
  • Gomes was beaten when Charlie Adam’s header following Xherdan Shaqiri’s corner hit the base of the post before ricocheting off the Brazilian and rolling into the net.
  • Defeat for Watford means they also missed out on moving up to 6th place while Stoke after such a slow start are now up to 11th
