Newcastle sign a Saviet in bid to get out of dropzone

Newcastle have signed midfielder Henri Saivet from Bordeaux on a five-and-a-half-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

Saivet, 25, helped the French club win Ligue 1 in 2009 and played for Senegal at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.

He made 178 appearances for Bordeaux in all competitions, scoring 23 goals.

Editor’s Note: Steve McClaren has identified that goals and the creating of them has been an issue this season for Newcastle and he has moved to address that with the signing of Saviet. They haven’t scored in the last 4 matches in League and Cup and currently have the third lowest goal tally in the Premier League

The signing of Saviet might not be the only bit of business that does this transfer window with Swansea’s Jonjo Shelvey earmarked for a move to Tyneside. With Newcastle 18th in the Premier League and Swansea 17th you have to question the wisdom of a move like this but after Shelvey was arguing with Swansea fans on Sunday during their F.A. Cup defeat to Oxford it seems as if any exit will do for the England International.
