January BBC Gossip Column Debunked – Issue 31

And here we are, we’ve reached the final day of the January transfer window. What final day deals will be made by the end of the night as clubs and players frantically bid to do some last minute business, here is what is making the headlines this morning in what will be a day packed full of gossip.

Roma have been in contact with Manchester United regarding 27-year-old Netherlands defender Daley Blind. (Mirror) Manchester United’s Mr Versatility could be saying arrivederci but to be honest I would be surprised if he did leave today

Manchester City will have to pay £70m to sign Leicester City winger Riyad Mahrez, 26. (Daily Star) No one really expected Mahrez to move to Manchester City did they, then again I guess we all expected Alexis Sanchez to be wearing Sky Blue this month didn’t we.

Serie A leaders Napoli have opened talks with Everton in an attempt to sign Dutch midfielder Davy Klaassen, 24, on loan until the end of the season. (Liverpool Echo) I think Davy Klassen will have to be labeled in the category marked flop

Everton are close to signing defender Eliaquim Mangala on loan from Manchester City.(Sky Sports) Big Sam’s quest for defensive reinforcements is nearly complete

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez has held crisis talks with owner Mike Ashley and remains “hopeful” of making a signing before the transfer window shuts. (Mirror) Newcastle are going to have a difficult final three months this season if they do not strengthen

But Benitez insists his position is unlikely to change even if late moves for targets such as Leicester striker Islam Slimani and Manchester City defender Eliaquim Mangala fail. (Northern Echo) Is this Benitez getting his excuses in as he angles his way out of the door?

Arsenal will allow defender Mathieu Debuchy, 32, to join Saint-Etienne on a free transfer. (L’Equipe – in French) I like Debuchy, Debuchy,

Wolfsburg are trying to persuade Liverpool’s Serbian international midfielder Lazar Markovic, 23, to join them rather than Premier League side Swansea. (Mail) The home of Volkswagen or the home of the Liberty Stadium?

Liverpool midfielder Ovie Ejaria, 20, is set to join Sunderland on loan for the rest of the season with fellow English defender Lloyd Jones, 22, poised to make a permanent move to Luton Town. (Liverpool Echo) Some Liverpool starlets moving on in a bid to get first team football.

Leeds United are closing in on the signing of forward Tyler Roberts from West Brom in a deal worth up to £4m. The 19-year-old Welshman has six months left on his contract. (Mail) A lot of money for a youngster who has not even made the breakthrough at the top level.

Swansea are in advanced talks with West Ham to bring Ghana forward Andre Ayew, 28, back to the Liberty Stadium, but are holding off including South Korea midfielder Ki Sung-yueng, 29, in the move. (Wales Online) Will the Ayew brothers be reunited tonight?

Bordeaux are in talks with Norwegian side Rosenborg to sign former Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner. The 30-year-old Dane could sign an initial loan deal with the French club. (TalkSport) Lord Bendtner could be swapping his castle for a chateaux
