Real Football Man All of the Football, All of the time
Time for another guest article as Maz Brown who you can follow on twitter returns, Maz is a Leeds fan and once again will be venting after a third successive defeat since starting this column. As always Maz the floor is now yours…
Leeds vs Millwall was always going to be a game that would create a fiery atmosphere and especially at Elland Road. Leeds were coming into this game with a couple of losses, namely one the shock FA Cup defeat to Newport County and with Samu Saiz and Eunan O’Kane suspended, the club were hoping for no more red cards to further tarnish their already poor disciplinary record. However, this wasn’t going to happen. Leeds found themselves 1-0 down after 18 minutes when Millwall’s Aidan O’Brien found the back of the net. Ex Leeds player Steve Morison wound the home fans up with his celebrations. No need for that!
Things went from bad to worse when Liam Cooper who wasn’t particularly having the best of games anyway got sent off for a challenge on George Saville who made the most of the challenge. Looking back, Cooper should have got a yellow, not a red. Saville should have been booked for his antics too! And Leeds’ misery was further compounded when Millwall scored three minutes from half-time to go 2-0 up.
Leeds needed to start the second half with endeavour and courage with just 10 men and remarkably they did just that when German striker Pierre-Michel Lasogga scored to give the home side hope. Then just a few minutes later, Elland Road erupted when Kemar Roofe scored the second goal to level the scores and it was clear from this point on that the game was going to be intense and exciting. Lasogga then sent the fans wild once again when he put Leeds into the lead at 3-2. All Leeds had to do from this point on was defend, defend and defend!
But this didn’t happen. Instead Millwall struck with two hammer blows, one on the 87th minute from Tom Elliott and the winner for Millwall came from Jed Wallace in extra time. Leeds were very disappointed having performed so valiantly in the second half with just 10 men.
It’s very difficult to put into words how hard that result was to take. However, we need to be much better with our discipline, we need to perform from the start of the game and not halfway through. Hopefully we’ll show this against Hull tomorrow night!
