Guest Article – The Death Of Possession Football?

Another Guest Article now and a new signing in the form of Gustaaf Weber. Gustaaf  is from Holland and has written an article on whether we are witnessing the death of possession Football – over to you Gustaaf

Possession football could be dead and burried by mid next week, if Leicester win the Premier League on Sunday against Manchester United and Atletico Madrid advance to the Champions League Final at the cost of Pep Guardiola’s Bayern. Being the best without having the ball are no longer dirty tactics. Sam Allardyce is sexy again.

Only Jose Mourinho got away with “Result is King” in the recent past. How about next season? What does it look like when Leicester plays Atletico. If and when Mourinho gets the job at United he will no doubt sit back waiting to break at Arsenal and Manchester City. Could old school Possession managers be jobless by the end of next season. Will Louis, Arsene, Manuel and Pep will all be sitting at home thinking what went wrong for possession football?

I am very happy for outsider Leicester to be Champions this year, just to show that big money can’t buy you titles. But teams with big money i expect to take the initiative and entertain me. LVG was 3rd with Holland at the World Cup with Leicester tactics, with Arjen Robben as the Jamie Vardy type role, so why bother with possession when you only end fifth with United?

When you have money and quality players, entertain! Otherwise what else is the point of having such great talents such as the players we see at Barcelona or Real Madrid each week not to mention a smattering of stars in the Premier League.

I guess with Leicester almost winning the Premier League it’s gone against everything we’ve been conditioned to understand about how Football should be played other the last decade or so. One thing for certain is that if possession football does stay alive then a lot of teams are going to have to seriously change the way in which they play.

Thanks Gustaaf for your article, hopefully Gustaaf will provide some more insights in the future. Do you agree with Gustaaf – please feel free to leave your comments below
