Germany vs Mexico – Match Preview

We already now one half of the two teams that will comprise this year’s Confederations Cup Final and tonight will seen the lineup completed as Germany and Mexico go head to head for the opportunity to face Copa America winners Chile on Sunday night.

World Cup holders Germany come into this game as winners of Group B and Joachim Low’s decision to bring more of an experimental side to the competition is one that is looking justified at present, this though was a choice that has somewhat upset FIFA.

With this being a dress rehearsal for next year’s jewel in the crown the fact that Germany could not really be bothered to bring a full strength squad speaks volumes of the importance of this tournament, that said it does also highlight the strength in depth that Germany do have at their disposal

After an opening fixture win over Australia which was arguably the most interesting group game of the lot, they then drew with what are now finalists Chile before going on to get the better of a Cameroon side that finishes the game with 10 men in somewhat ludicrous circumstances.

For their opponents Mexico, there come into this game as Group A runners up. An impressive 7 point haul was only bettered by Portugal due to the European champions having a better goal difference, in hindsight Portugal may well have been better off finishing as a group runner up and going head to head with this young German side.

Mexico booked their place in the Semi’s last Saturday after coming from behind against hosts Russia, in what was for all intents and purposes a winner takes all match. After drawing their opener against Portugal, they then had successive 2-1 wins against both New Zealand and Russia.

This Mexico side should not be underrated as they more than held their own against the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and company and you could very much argue that they were a stronger outfit then the one that they will face this evening.

Germany will go into this game as slight favourites but Mexico will certainly give this young side a test, I think Joachim Low’s side will run out eventual winners but I think the smart money here could be on a both teams to score tonight.

Here are the results of the twitter poll that I carried out yesterday (please feel free to follow me and get involved)

Twitter thinks that it is going to be a comfortable win for Germany, that said they thought the same in yesterday’s tie between Portugal and Chile. I’ll analyse this in more detail later on at my other website Real Football Data
