FIFA Confederations Cup – Group B Preview

After the spectacle of Group A came to a conclusion yesterday it is now time to conclude the group stages of the FIFA Confederations Cup this afternoon with the two matches in Group B. Going into this pair of fixtures we are in a scenario where all four teams can still progress to the Semi Finals.

The Group B winners will go up against Mexico who booked their place in the Semi’s after a win over Russia while the runners-up will go up against the defending European Champions Portugal who topped the group after an emphatic win over New Zealand.

Although all four sides could progress, Germany and Chile are very much in the box seat going in to these final set of fixtures. They go into today knowing at a point would see them progress to the next stage of the competition while for both Australia and Cameroon it is win or bust.

Should we see the scenario where Australia beat Chile and Cameroon beat Germany then we will have to get the calculators out as all teams will be on four points after their three group stage fixtures. If that does end up being the case then it will go down to goal difference and if they cannot be split by that then we could be looking at either goals scored or head to head records.

For Germany and Chile they will have to decide whether it was worth setting out to play for just a point or whether they should be looking to kill off any opposition early on, also they will want to keep in mind that winning Group B will be preferential so as to avoid having to face Portugal in the Semi Final’s

This young Germany team were tested by Australia in a five goal thriller and were held by Chile so they are definitely there for the taking as African champions Cameroon know that nothing less than a win will do, while Australia arguably have the harder clash against the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Arturo Vidal.

The smart money would be on Germany and Chile to pass their test unscathed but the tournament could perhaps do with something of a curve ball to keep the interest alive especially now that the home side Russia have been sent packing. Kick off for these two matches is at 4pm UK time.
