The race for World Cup qualification out of Group E is approaching the final lap and there are three runners left in the race. Poland have booked a play-off place and require just one more point to get them over the line and into the finals.
Poland won 6-1 in Armenia last night as Robert Lewandowski scored a hat-trick to make history. Not only did he become Poland’s record international goalscorer but he also has now scored the most goals in a European qualifying group.
He has now scored 15 goals in qualification although that could very well be a record that is broken by who else but Cristiano Ronaldo as the Portuguese superstar has 14 goals to his name and will potentially play one more game then Lewandowski over the next few days.
While Denmark need just a point to secure a play-off spot as they now find themselves three points of Montenegro after victory in Podgorica last night. The hopes are looking slim for the Montenegrin’s after Christian Eriksen‘s solitary goal was enough to earn all three points.
The Dane has been in scintillating form for the national side as of late as he has scored in each of Denmark’s last four qualifiers and in five of the last six – the game in which he did not score was a 0-0 draw with Romania in Cluj. It is fair to say that the Tottenham’s midfielders contribution has been all important.
The only way that Montenegro can qualify for the play-offs is if they beat Poland on Sunday. If they were to do that and Denmark were to slip up at home to Romania then we would then have to get the calculators out. However it would be the same scenario for Poland and Denmark should the Danes pick up all three points at home.
There are a few permutations left so it is going to be an interesting on Sunday to see who will make up the top two spots in this particular group. Here are all the goals from last night.
Armenia vs Poland
Montenegro vs Denmark
Romania vs Kazhakstan
