Are Leicester looking to Mendy to make do?

Premier League champions Leicester have made another addition to their title winning squad as they announce the signing of Nampalys Mendy from Nice. The Frenchman joins on a four year contract with the fee being undisclosed.

Mendy who previously played for Monaco, made 110 appearances for Nice in his three years at the Allianz Riviera. He is Leicester’s third signing of the Summer with Goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler and Defender Luis Hernandez already signing for the club.

The question that Leicester will have to ask themselves though is how do they add to a title winning squad and what level of transfer target can they look to bring in. Even a side that wins a championship will need improving but with Leicester it was all about a team ethos last season so Claudio Ranieri will have to be careful that new signings don’t create some disharmony within the group.

It would be silly for Leicester to rest on their laurels and go into next season with the same group of players and they have obviously highlighted what areas do need improving but the names they have already bought in you get the feeling that these will be very much be squad players

But with the advent of Champions League football on the horizon that is exactly what they are going to need if they are to have a proper crack of competing on two fronts. With them only playing once a week last season they could get away with using the same core of players each game but this season will prove to be a different prospect

Although with the signing of Mendy does this beg the question that he may well be a ready made replacement for N’Golo Kante. Leicester have already managed to stave off interest from Arsenal in regards to Jamie Vardy and subsequently tie the England international down to a new contract but will they have the same luck with Kante.

For every game that Kante plays in Euro 2016 he is increasingly in the shop window, if France do go on to win the competition then you would imagine that Leicester could name their price but also the interest in Kante would be even greater.

Therefore has Mendy been bought with Kante’s departure in mind. If Kante stays then they have a solid backup and if he goes then at least they have someone ready to slot straight into the side. Getting players into the club will be the easier task this summer while keeping hold of the men who played the key roles in winning the Premier League title could be harder.
