Borussia Dortmund vs Tottenham a few quick thoughts

  • This Champions League lark is proving to be easy for Tottenham
  • 13 points from a possible 15 sees them secure top spot in Group H as they now look to the Round of 16
  • In theory they will be given an easier draw but there are still some potential banana skins in there with Bayern Munich and Juventus potentially lying in wait.
  • However it does guarantee a home tie in the 2nd leg and if you ask any manager worth his salt that is most definitely in the preference in this competition
  • Thanks to victory last night the final fixture against APOEL becomes a dead rubber with Mauricio Pochettino being afforded the opportunity to rest key players
  • To be honest I thought that may have been the case last night with the tie in Dortmund becoming something of a free hit in a sense
  • But after events at the weekend it was deemed that the club needed to bounce back in the best possible way and that was by delivering the three points to secure first in the group
  • Why wait until December when the job could be completed last night
  • And it ended up being a job well done especially with Tottenham having to come from behind in which to do so
  • It was certainly a stronger Spurs lineup than I had anticipated especially as I thought Harry Kane may well be rested for the busy run of Premier League fixtures that we have on the horizon
  • But it must be glad that I am glad he did feature from the start as he would be responsible for the goal that drew the two club levels
  • Six goals in five Champions League matches this season, his stature seems to be rising with every continental outing he makes
  • Tottenham would not have it there own way though and were perhaps lucky to have not gone one down earlier than they did
  • Andriy Yarmolenko’s inch perfect lofted pass split the centreback and with both Serge Aurier and Danny Rose playing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang onside all that was left for the Gabon international to do was to stroke the ball past Hugo Lloris
  • Only he failed to get a proper connection on the ball and brushed his shot wide
  • A get out of jail free card played there by Spurs
  • But minutes after Dortmund would be ahead and it would be Aubameyang who would do the damage
  • He finished off a move that included a clever backheel by Yarmolenko to cut open the Tottenham defence
  • Not a lot that Lloris could do about that as the German side took the ascendancy and one that would take into the half time interval
  • However after the restart it would only last another three minutes as Kane got on the scoresheet
  • From first sight it looked like there was only half a chance available
  • That is all that Kane needs right now as he found enough space to get his shot away and tuck it into near post with parity now restored
  • Tottenham were level but their tails were now up, if anyone looked like scoring next it would be them
  • And with just 14 minutes it would be Hueng min-Son who would score the goal that turned out to be the winner
  • Neat work from Dele Alli in around the box meant that Son was given enough space to be fed the ball by the England international
  • It just needed a good first touch from Son to tee up the shot and the rest was history
  • 2-1 Tottenham and top of the group in touching distance
  • They still had a portion of the game to go but at this point Dortmund had wilted
  • Not only that but Davinson Sanchez was in luxury mode as he dealt with absolutely everything that was thrown at him
  • He was arguably the only player that came out of the North London Derby defeat with any real credit and his performance last night was no different
  • In comparison though a lot more players even the whole team came out with the credit they deserved after that performance last night
  • The hope is that the defeat to Arsenal was just a blip and nothing more
  • We will find out if that is the case when we play host to West Brom on Saturday
