Barcelona may have moved back to the top of La Liga but the 6-1 win would have been overshadowed by the fact that Luis Enrique has announced that he will be stepping down as manager of the Catalan giants at the end of the season.
The 46 year old Spanish international who has won successive league titles and the Champions League since taking charge of the club in 2014 said that he needs to “rest” it seems once again the pressures of being in charge of one of the biggest clubs in the world has burnt out another manager.
Pep Guardiola’s reign was also bought to and end after being burnt out and it seems as if a maximum 3 year cycle is all that can be achieved at the Nou Camp due to the pressures that the job brings with it.
On the pitch though Sporting were hit for Six and that triumph has seen Barcelona now go a point clear at the top after Real Madrid’s surprise 3-3 draw with Las Palmas last night, Real may have a game in hand but the momentum seems to be swining back Barcelona’s way as of late.
Last night they raced into a 2-0 lead thanks to early goals from Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez but Sporting would have had a glimmer of hope when Carlos Castro halved the deficit on 21 minutes, that was as good as it was going to get though as the home side turned it up a notch.
Soon after the two goal advantage would be restored when Suarez scored his second to make it 3-1. That would be the score going into the break but there was still more than enough time for three more unanswered Barca goals. Paco Alcacer, Neymar and Ivan Rakitic all getting on the scoresheet to confirm a resounding win.
But the focus now will shift to who will be the next man to sit in the Nou Camp hotseat and can Barcelona give Luis Enrique the perfect send off?
