The first of two Spanish season curtain raisers took place last night as Barcelona took on Real Madrid in the Supercup first leg. Nou Camp was the venue but there was little to celebrate for the majority of the fans as Los Blancos drew first blood in Catalonia.
Real Madrid may well have earned the spoils after their 3-1 win and the headlines will have no doubt once again been written than who else but Cristiano Ronaldo. Only this time it would have been for disciplinary matters as the Portuguese idol saw red in more ways than one.
The former Manchester United had already been booked after removing his shirt, that came after he scored from an absolute rocket shot to put the Champions League winners 2-1 ahead and soon after he would be shown a second yellow of the one after being adjudged to have dived.
A decision that the 32 year old did not take all that well as he then shoved the referee in the back, something that could see him pick up an astonishing 12 match ban. In all fairness I would be surprised if that actually proved to be the case, but the minimum ban in this scenario will be 4 matches.
Regardless of what the Spanish F.A. hand out, he will certainly miss Wednesday’s return leg. But it may not matter all that much as Real Madrid are certainly in the box seat after running out 3-1 winners. After a goalless first half the action picked up after the break.
First Gerard Pique would open the scoring, although in the wrong net as his own goal 10 minutes after the restart put Real Madrid. Parity would however be restored though with 13 minutes when Lionel Messi scored from the penalty spot.
That parity would only last three minutes when Ronaldo scored from his missile shot and even after his sending off there was still time for Marco Asensio to wrap up the victory and put Zinedine Zidane’s men in a commanding position before the 2nd leg.
Here are the highlights from last night
