- 1-0 to Atletico last night and at first glance that may have raised a few eyebrows but in all honesty the result doesn’t come as a particularly huge surprise either
- If Diego Simeone’s side were to win last night’s 1st leg then this is exactly the kind of result you would expect them to produce
- Another resolute performance not just from the backline but from the whole side but again it’s exactly what you would expect from this well drilled Atletico side
- It was a case of better call Saul for Atletico as his mazy dribble led to a sumptuous solo goal after just 11 minutes
- He weaved throughout the Bayern defence and then slotted home in off a post to give Atletico the early lead
- Bayern were caught cold and truth be told never really warmed up throughout the first 45 minutes
- But they came back into the game with David Alaba stunning shot coming back off the bar with Jan Oblak well beaten
- Oblak was then called into action to keep Arturo Vidal’s shot out and maintain the home side’s advantage
- Fernando Torres could and should have made it two late on but he prodded his effort against the post
- As it stands Atletico take a slender advantage to The Allianz Arena but the tie is still very much in the balance
- Bayern will have to improve in the 2nd leg if they are to turn the deficit around but in front of their own fans they will be a much more fearsome proposition for Atletico to deal with
- Simeone won the tactical battle between himself and Pep Guardiola last night. Bayern were stifled and lacked the freedom to play their expansive passing game
- First blood to Atletico but Bayern will still harbour dreams of another treble and a perfect leaving gift for the outgoing Guardiola.
