Barcelona continued their unbeaten start to the season last night with win in the Basque region against Athletic Bilbao, after the goings on at a political level what with all things Catalan independence the game last night would have come as a welcome distraction for fans and players alike.
Lionel Messi was on hand to score his 12th league goal of the season but to be honest he should have made it a bakers dozen (13) after rounding Athletic’s keeper Kepa but somehow then going onto hit the post, that said it would be the Argentine who would break the deadlock on 36 minutes.
With the goal coming close to half time you would have felt that it would have given reason for Athletic’s heads to drop, to be honest it was far from it as they came out all guns blazing in the second half looking not just for one point but for all three.
Raul Garcia was unfortunate to his see his header rattle back off the bar while the evergreen Aritz Aduriz would see his effort well saved by Barcelona’s German international goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen. Athletic threw everything forward in search of a goal but would then be subsequently punished late on.
With Athletic looking susceptible at the back it gave the perfect chance for Barcelona to pick them off and they did exactly that in injury time. The former Tottenham midfielder Paulinho slotted home in injury time to make sure all three points would be Barcelona’s.
Ernesto Valverde’s men now sit four points clear of Valencia in second with arch rivals Real Madrid eight points behind albeit with a game in hand. Barcelona will be hoping that their Catalan cousins Girona will do them a favour today and take points off of Real Madrid.
Here is all the action from last night
