Book Review – Bicycle Kicks by Simon Hood

I have a lot of Footballing books and it has occurred to me that I’ve never actually done a book review for my blog. So I’m going to kick off this series with the latest book that I’ve just read and it’s called “Bicycle Kicks” with the author being Simon Hood.

Now when coming across this book I noticed it combined my two loves – Football and Cycling so I thought this would be an ideal book to get stuck into too. The premise of the book is that Simon is a long suffering York City Fan and decides to cycle to each of York City’s League and F.A. Cup matches from the 2009/10 season. Simon thankfully has the sense not to include their F.A. Trophy exploits but that said still cycles to more than 50 games in a season of twists and turns.

It’s not just a standard review of the season though, the book has a lot of warmth and good humour as Simon introduces his supporting cast of fellow York City fans and also guest cyclists who assist Simon in his challenge. The challenge is for a great cause as Simon is doing it to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society

As Simon travels the length of breadth of England you get the feeling that you are in the saddle with him as he describes the picturesque scenery that the country offers up not only that though but you also feel part of the anguish that Simon feels both in the saddle and from watching his beloved Minstermen

I’m not sure if it’s ironic or quite poignant that as I’ve finished reading the book, York look set to return to the league that they try to get out of during the course of the book. I wonder if that means Simon has plans for a sequel?
