- Arturo Vidal’s early header was the difference between the two sides as Bayern take a slender advantage into the 2nd leg of the tie with Benfica
- Vidal ended a well worked move and nodded home a Juan Bernat in what was the first attack of the game
- After scoring in the 2nd minute you felt Benfica could be in for a long night but it proved not to be the case
- Although a win for Bayern, Pep Guardiola will no doubt be disappointed that their is only a 1 goal lead to take to Lisbon
- Benfica bar being caught cold early on where resolute in Defence and Bayern found them difficult to break down for the rest of the Evening
- Bayern lacked their usual frenetic pace and for all their possession they failed to put Benfica to the sword
- Their attacking unit was kept quiet and their plan to stretch the Benfica Defence through the wide play of Franck Ribery and Douglas Costa was largely foiled
- Hero from the previous round Thomas Muller had a quiet game and that in turn left Robert Lewandowski isolated
- Benfica themselves only had 1 shot on target and it was when Jonas’ effort was charged down by Javi Martinez
- It was a small scare for Bayern but in truth it was a game where Bayern were below their best and Benfica failed to offer much going forward
- Benfica will still feel they are in the tie and will now hope to turn things around in the 2nd leg, if they could have knicked a crucial away goal then they would be in the driving seat but it could still go either way
- The last time Bayern were in Portugal for a Champions League Quarter Final was last season when they faced Porto and lost 3-1. So Portugal doesn’t hold the fondest of memories for the Bavarian side so I wouldn’t right Benfica off just yet
