West Brom vs Manchester United a few quick thoughts

  • West Brom have all but assured Premier League Football for another season with the win at home to Manchester United yesterday
  • The win sees them move to 11th and extend their unbeaten run to 4 matches
  • As for United defeat sees them stay 6th and miss the chance to go level on points with their cross town rivals Manchester City
  • Salomon Rondon’s second goal of the week halfway through the second half proved to be the difference but the win was no doubt aided by the sending off of Juan Mata
  • The Spanish International picked up two bookings in quick succession much to the ire of Louis Van Gaal on the sidelines
  • Van Gaal wasn’t shy in criticising Mata for his needless pair of Yellow Cards with United subsequently being down to 10 men it was definitely the turning point of the game
  • Once West Brom had the numerical advantage they contained United and the away side rarely threatened in attack
  • Tony Pulis’ side were certainly containing United but weren’t really making too much use of their numerical advantage
  • Until the Venezuelan Rondon found space and fired home first time to put The Baggies in front
  • The goal knocked what little wind that United had out of their sails
  • With Marcus Rashford not being able to add to his 4 goal tally this season, he made way after 75 minutes for Memphis Depay who himself had little affect on the game
  • For West Brom it’s objective complete for another season and Pulis can consider it a job well done
  • It may not be the prettiest thing to watch but again it has worked
  • As for United the focus shifts to the Europa League and the clash with their most hated rivals Liverpool
  • Their slim Top 4 hopes taking a massive dent at The Hawthorns, maybe they will have to focus on winning the Europa League instead. Then again you could make the same case for their opponents
  • After a step forward for United, it’s now one step back. Everytime you feel there’s momentum they are halted in their tracks. A day to forget for Van Gaal, although he’ll need more days to remember if he wants to make sure he is leading the United side into the next campaign.
