- First blood to Liverpool in this all English Europa League tie
- A miserable night for Manchester United at Anfield who had David De Gea to thank for keeping the defeat at a respectable score line
- Although it looked like a Premier League clash it definitely was one of those “European Nights” for Liverpool
- Boosted on by a raucous home crowd they took the game to their most hated local rivals from the onset
- Liverpool were given the perfect opportunity to go in front after 20 minutes when Nathanial Clyne was hauled down by Memphis Depay just inside the area.
- The Referee gave himself a couple of seconds and then awarded a spot kick
- One that Daniel Sturridge duly obliged with to put the Merseysiders infront
- United just couldn’t get a hold in the game and it was De Gea who was probably their busiest player with a string of saves to at least keep them in the game
- But they lacked any attacking endeavor, a sad statistic at the end as they created just 1 shot on target
- At 1-0 though the tie was very much still alive but the soft second that they conceded just summed their night up
- All Michael Carrick had to do was clear the ball into touch but his dalliance gave Roberto Firmino the time to smash the ball home from close range
- Proof positive why Michael Carrick shouldn’t be playing at Centre Back
- This sent Anfield into raptures and Jurgen Klopp didn’t hold back in showing his emotions at the fact that Liverpool have a 2-0 buffer going into the 2nd leg
- As for United, the inquest now begins and the knives will once again be sharpened for Louis Van Gaal.
- A backdoor route to the Champions League now looks to be closer for United
- While it’s still very much open for Liverpool. What price a final against Dortmund and Jurgen Klopp facing up against his old side. It might be worth a punt on last night’s evidence.
