- It turned out to be a routine victory for Spurs yesterday Lunchtime
- The wind had the potential to be a big leveler but the conditions couldn’t put The North London club off their stride
- The game didn’t have the best of starts especially for Colchester as a clash of heads by Tom Eastman and Alex Wynter in the first minute saw them both having to be substituted off, Eastman due to a cut that wouldn’t stop bleeding and Wynter hauled off with concussion
- With Colchester losing their first choice Centre Back partnership a difficult task was made near impossible
- Eastman was being treated on the sidelines and at this point the U’s were down to 10 men this encouraged wave after wave of Spurs pressure with Kieran Trippier getting a lot of joy down the right side
- But they couldn’t quite take advantage with their numerical superiority, although you just thought it was a matter of time with the amount of chances they were creating
- Erik Lamela hit the outside of the post and Christian Eriksen fired just over before Nacer Chadli broke the deadlock and gave Spurs a deserved lead
- For all Spurs industry it was only 1-0 at the break and as you know with cup ties that means the game is nowhere near over
- But Eric Dier made sure of the progression as his long range effort was cruelly deflected past the Colchester Goalkeeper and into the net for 2-0
- Moments later Colchester had their best chance but Marvin Sordell could only hit the post when 1 on 1 with Michel Vorm
- That proved even more costly as moments later Nacer Chadli got his second of the game
- Colchester then did get some joy with 10 minutes to spare as Ben Davies ended up putting into his own net, but you can’t blame Davies all that much as the ball cannoned back off a post and straight onto him
- It just shows what a difference two minutes makes, if Sordell scores his chance and Chadli doesn’t make it 3-1 then we have the makings of a cup comeback
- But it wasn’t to be as Tom Carroll made it 4-1 and secured Spurs place in the 5th Round
- With Nacer Chadli getting a brace you have to wonder if Mauricio Pochettino even needs to sign a backup Forward in the next 48 hours
- Another good test for the fringe players who came through it in flying colours
- Some may ask why Pochettino picked such a strong lineup especially as Colchester are bottom of League One and have conceded 65 Goals this season. I would argue that it’s better to get the job done and then try and sub players off after 60/65 minutes then run the risk of having to go to a replay and even more game time
- At the end of the day Pochettino and his staff will have so much data and information about player fatigue that no one is going to be played unnecessarily plus when you are a winning team you won’t feel that tiredness quite as much
- The gamble if you could call it that paid of yesterday for Pochettino, now the focus shifts to the trip to Norwich in Midweek. COYS!
