Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid a few quick thoughts

  • Fernando Torres and Luis Suarez will have grabbed the headlines last night. The former for the wrong reasons and latter for the right ones
  • Torres kept his goalscoring record against Barcelona going with a first half strike to put Atletico ahead but then he was also involved in the games turning point
  • It seemed as if Torres had a rush of blood to the head after his goal. Minutes later he picked up a first yellow card
  • You would have thought he would have calmed down after that but on 35 minutes and just 6 minutes after his first Yellow he carried out another poor challenge in which the Referee had no qualms in showing a second Yellow and his subsequent marching orders
  • With Barcelona a goal down but with the numerical advantage on their expansive Nou Camp pitch it was going to be a real test for Diego Simeone’s side to hold out and protect their lead
  • Then enter Luis Suarez, after a quiet El Clasico he turned the game on it’s head
  • If the first half was about Torres then the second half was all about the Uruguayan Forward
  • First he prodded home a patient well worked move from the home side on 63 minutes and then 10 minutes later powered a header past Jan Oblak to give the holders the lead
  • Suarez may have been lucky himself not to be given his marching orders after lashing out at Juanfran in the first half
  • A frustrating night for Atletico as they will be wondering how the game would have turned out had they not lost Torres
  • Another quiet night for Lionel Messi who again failed to get himself on the score sheet (he’s lost it….joke)
  • Although a crucial away goal does set the tie up nicely for the 2nd leg, you wouldn’t put it past Atletico playing for a tight 1-0 win and progress through to the Semi Finals
  • It’s first blood Barcelona but it’s still very much in the balance
